briarwood: Supernatural - Jessica Moore (SPN Jessica)

Is it Friday yet?

I did it! My Jessica fic is done and I submitted it for [community profile] ladiesbigbang. A day ahead of the deadline, too! It's not had a beta from someone familiar with the fandom, which would have made me happier about it, but the story is coherent and it's been proofed and corrected.

My holiday weekend was spent dog-sitting, as I mentioned earlier. I did get to the cinema Saturday, but it was a last minute rush thing. I enjoyed The Girl Who Played With Fire though it does suffer from being the middle installment of a trilogy and the Bond-esque villain really doesn't help. I'm not sure why Steig Larsson's novels are so lauded. I mean, they are good and Lisbeth Salander is a kick-ass heroine, but (in English translation, at least) the novels are slow-paced, much too journalistic and analytical and, well, kinda boring. Mostly because they focus on the male (author insert) protagonist instead of Lisbeth, who is the interesting character. The movies would be a chance to correct that (the first did, to an extent) but this one, while it fixes the worst fault of the novel isn't great.

I'm halfway through reading the third book of the trilogy and I can't help thinking it'll make a terrible movie. It's all background and research and people talking about stuff that happened years and years ago. As a novel it's okay, but you can't turn this into a script and have it be interesting. Maybe there'll be some action in the second half.

Just before they left, Mum said to me, "If you want to clean the oven while we're away..." Translation: I expect you do do this. So much for my plans to do lots of baking, huh. I love the way she gets to go away for a holiday and not only do I not get a weekend of freedom, because someone has to take care of the dogs, but I get a list of jobs to do. Cleaning that oven is a horrible job. And I couldn't do it properly anyway because I couldn't find the ammonia. For the record, I don't mind doing the work. I know Mum can't do it any more. But I'd prefer to do it when it's convenient for me. If I ever get my own place, I'm gonna get an oven that's at waist level, not on the bloody floor.

I also managed to watch the full LOTR trilogy - extended versions, spaced out over the weekend. I love those movies so much.

Roadhouse Con on Friday!
