Dear Yuletide Writer...
Thank you so much for signing up for Yuletide, and especially for offering to write one or more of my fandoms. Before you read on, I want to stress that I'm quite sure I will love any story set in one of the fandoms I requested. If you have a cool idea that doesn't seem to fit with this letter, please, go for it. If you enjoy writing it, I'll enjoy reading it.
Everything I've written below is intended to help you; if you don't find it helpful, feel free to discard it.
General Stuff: I enjoy gen, het, slash and femslash fics. I enjoy most genres from angst to drama to character studies to pwps or romantic fics...anything, really. The prompts I left for Yuletide are gen-focussed, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy a sexy fic.
My favourite stories are those that explore something about the characters and their relationships, and as will be obvious from my requests, I generally prefer the female characters in a fandom. The fictional characters I love are my 'friends'; I like stories where I feel I'm learning something knew about them. But the context for that can be almost any genre. I guess I lean toward angst or drama, maybe hurt/comfort - stories with a bit of a plot - but I enjoy most kinds of stories and styles.
My only serious no-no's are a) RPF , b) pregnancy and c) overly negative portrayals of female characters (don't misunderstand me on the last one: some female characters are villains and I'm cool with that. But there's a big difference between negative because she's evil and negative because she's a womanwho gets in the way of the m/m OTP, you know?) Still, I was careful to select no more than one male character per fandom in my signup, so hopefully if you were assigned to write for me, you like women characters, too. Other than the pregnancy thing I'm very hard to squick, and I'm open to just about anything fic-wise.
My specific requests:
1. Alice in Wonderland (Burton)
I love this movie! The first time I saw it I knew it would be one of my Yuletide requests. There are so many wonderful characters to choose from, and please don't feel limited to the ones I listed. Equally, don't feel you have to include everyone I listed in your story.
When the White Queen exiled Iracebeth and Stayne at the end of the movie, it seemed like a fate worse than death to me. What are the Outlands? How will they survive there? Will they kill each other? Or will they manage to learn to live together? We didn't see much of Iracebeth's powers in the film but surely she must have them to have dominated Underland for so long? I think there's a fascinating story in there.
If that idea doesn't work for you, I'd really enjoy a story about Aunt Imogene...particularly one in which her Prince turns out to be real...although not necessarily really real :)
That said, I'm certain I'll love anything written about the women of Underland. Don't feel you need to stick to my ideas.
2. Haven
My absolute favourite thing in Haven is the friendship between Audrey and Eleanor. I love Eleanor's snarky practicality - she makes a perfect foil for Audrey's imagination. I was so disappointed when Eleanor was written out.
I would love a story that's in some way about their friendship. I have nothing against involving the other characters, too! I don't think there's anyone in Haven I dislike. My favourites tend to be the minor characters: I love the Teague brothers, and Jess, and Eleanor, of course. I would enjoy a story that delves into the history of the town a little, particularly the little clues we see in the opening credits...and that maze-tattoo.
3. Ilona Andrews - Kate Daniels Books
Kate doesn't have a lot of people she can wholly trust. Andrea is one, and I enjoy how she insists on having a normal friendship with Kate, doing lunch and talking boys no matter what crazy stuff is going on. I think Julie is another, but it's hard for her to convince Kate she doesn't need constant care. I would love a story with any two out of the three women (or all three) helping each other out in some way. Bonus if the story involves vampires, 'cause I love the vamps in this 'verse: they're so scary and pitiful at the same time.
I'm not a huge fan of most of the male characters in the Kate Daniel's books. I love Doolittle, though, and I rather liked Nick the Crusader.
4. Kristine Kathryn Rusch - The Fey Series
This is one of my favourite epics because it's so very dark. Many of the characters are horrible people who do awful things, yet you can't help feeling some sympathy for them at times.
What I'd really love to see is a story set in one of the big gaps in the series. There are these periods, years long, where we know very little about what happened.
Maybe a story set between Jewel's marriage and her death, maybe involving the Fey in the Settlement, or what her life was really like in the Islander palace: it surely couldn't have been easy. Did she have much contact with other Fey? Did she have any islander friends? Or, perhaps focus on another of the characters during that time: was the Shaman optimistic about the future? What was Solanda's life like, reduced to running errands for Rugar?
The other big gap is the time after Jewel and Rugar's deaths but before the third novel begins. I would prefer a story that doesn't focus too much on the children (that is, I don't really want 'adventures in the nursery' type stories), but maybe about how the adult characters lives revolved around them. Or how Jewel's death turned everyone's lives upside-down: the Fey abandoned the Settlement but others began to live outside; did Solanda face the same problems as Jewel living in the Palace? How much did the Shaman have to do with Gift?
There are so many possible stories to tell in those periods not covered by the novels...use one of my ideas or anything else that occurs to you! Don't feel you have to stick to the characters I listed, either: I picked out my favourites, but I would enjoy fics about others, too: maybe Matthias, Titus, Nicholas, the Wisps who raised Gift, Mend (the Fey domestic who fell for Adrian), Scavenger...the novels have such a huge cast to choose from!
