Fandom Snowflake Challenge - Day 2
Day Two of the Fandom Snowflake Challenge:
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.
This is hard for me because I actually don't read a lot of fanfic any more. It's a time thing and a no-access-from-work thing, mostly. I actually prefer the rare pairings, the lesser-known stuff. But by their nature I have to work really hard to find them and I don't have the time any more.
But, here's a story or two I remember. These aren't rare so much as from fandoms I don't generally frequent, so hopefully they'll be new to most of those who read my journal.
Irenicon by Yahtzee is an Alias fanfic that honestly has to be read to be believed. I'm not sure when it was written, but it picks up after the season three cliffhanger and tells a truly epic story that could easily have been canon after that point. In fact, parts of it are far superior to what canon eventually came up with. If you never read another Alias fanfic, you should read this one.
(In fact, having discovered the author is on AO3, I'm off to read everything she's ever written in a fandom I recognise. 'Scuse me. Oh, wait, I'd better finish this post first.)
Age(s) of the Geek by mermaid is a series of short stories in which Alex Hardison of Leverage encounters various geek geniuses from other shows, mostly fandoms I'm familiar with but don't read: Willow from Buffy, Mac from Veronica Mars, Ash from Supernatural and others. I won't spoil it. It's very true to character, funny, touching and intriguing. I just stumbled across the series tag-surfing on AO3.
One of my all time favourite Xena: Warrior Princess fanfics is Conquering Xena by Mil Toro. [Note: I am not Mil Toro - her work was archived on my site for many years but we are absolutely not the same person.] Mil took bits and pieces of the canon Xena the Conqueror AU, the Bitter Suite dreamworld, the whole Amazon arc and spun them together into a dark and very sexy AU (Warnings for non-con and dub-con in this one). It's not a story I would have expected to like if it had been described to me, but when I began reading it I simply couldn't stop until I reached the end.
