Stiff and worn...

Lois Maxwell has died. I adore the Bond movies in all their political incorrectness, and I loved Moneypenny. Although toward the end, Lois seemed to be getting too old for the role, I think it's great that she was able to play the part for so long. Never a "star" she always came across in interviews as a very warm, down to earth person and I'm sad that she died. Glad that she died with her family around her. She'll be missed.

I spent most of the weekend catching up on my Great Room Cleaning Project. For those who've never seen my place, I share a house with mum, sis and (now) sis's boyfriend, plus three dogs. As sis and mum are smokers and I'm not, I basically live in one room. I have my PC in here, and my TV and cable. I have timeshare on the kitchen, bathroom and garden and basically everyone else gets the rest of the house. This arrangement suits me fine, but mum and sis have the rest of the house to keep things like books, DVDs, photos...whatever. Possessions. I have my one room. And I have a lot of stuff. I have this huge collection of DVDs and videos, I have fannish memorabilia, I have my pictures and my extensive library...which barely leaves enough space for me to sleep. I don't have a bed, even: I have a couch that converts.

The last time this house was properly re-wired was the 1950's. In the 70's the sockets were replaced with the then-new three-pin sockets but that's cosmetic: most of them are not properly earthed. I discovered this when I moved back into the house in 2001 and attempted to replace a light fitting: you don't want to know what was in the cavity along with the ancient wiring. Basically, it's dangerous. I've been nagging mum ever since to get the place properly re-wired. Last time she promised to have it done was four years ago: I boxed up a lot of my stuff in anticipation, but she never got around to getting the work done.

Now she's promising, again, that it'll happen. The work is going to involve taking up floorboards in all of the upstairs rooms, which means most of my stuff can't be in my room. So my Great Room Cleaning Project is an attempt to thin the ground so that it's feasible for this work to be done in my room. I decided it was time to throw out a lot of stuff. It's a wrench, but I'm trying to see it as kind of a feng shui thing: getting rid of the clutter. So anything I've got on DVD or can obtain on DVD: out go the tapes. Any clothing I haven't worn for a year: gone. Books I haven't read for ages: local charity shops. Old magazines: in the recycle bin. And so on. A couple of weeks ago I filled maybe ten bags with junk-to-go (not including recycle-ables). This weekend I filled another eight, and I bought a new chest of drawers to replace the old fallen-apart set, and built that from a flat pack. Normally I have no trouble with flat packs, but this one didn't exactly have clear instructions (they were in several languages but English wasn't one of them). Anyhow, with a little help, I got it done.

And now I'm so stiff I can barely move. I can type, but when I try to stand or even change my sitting position...ouch. I guess it'll wear off in a couple of days.

I'm almost done, I think, with the throwing-stuff-out. Next job is to sort through what I'm keeping and get my shelves in some kind of order.

Sigh.

Tomorrow is my not-a-date with K. I'll let y'all know how it goes.
