I decided that, it was the increasing graphic nature of movie violence and its realism that were getting to me.

Yes, exactly. On the one hand, the PG-rated thing of having major battle scenes with miraculously no blood is annoying. On the other hand, since make-up and effects reached the point where it is possible to make it look very real, a lot of horror movies just go too far. Less is more, you know?

I think it's like the "show don't tell" rule in written fiction: these horror films get so caught up in showing the gore that they forget it's not what happened that delivers the scare - it's the reaction to what happened. You don't need to see every little detail, just the reactions to it.
