Yes, I am crazy

I downloaded the free version of Spore and spent the evening creating crazy critters with eyes in weird places and then giving them babies. It's ridiculous, silly fun. I just might have to buy the full version.

(Except I should have been writing.)

Plans for the weekend. Well, tomorrow is Friday the 13th, so I'm off to see Friday the 13th. I figure if I leave work a little early I can make the 16.40 show. People dying horribly with no sign of a plot isn't my notion of entertainment, but I am a SPN fan and must at least be able to talk about it.

(And speaking of SPN - who saw Mischa in Nip/Tuck this week? Suddenly I'm really looking forward to Asylum...please Goddess someone ask him about that ep so I don't have to!)

Then on Saturday I'm going to see Benjamin Button. I don't know what to expect from that one: even the good reviews seem to compare it to Forest Gump which I hated, but the trailers and the general look of it are really appealing to me. Also, it's Cate Blanchet, who is usually brilliant. Anyone seen it?

Spore? I'm almost afraid to ask. ;-)

Oh, my gods, haven't you heard about Spore? Google it.

Basically it's a game where you "invent" an alien creature, put it into an environment and watch it evolve. It's...sorta like "Mr Potato Head" for the computer age, with added educational value.

The free version is just a taster: you can create creatures and watch them play (and make vids of them!) but it's limited to a small library of parts and just one environment. The full version is modular, with new add-ins coming out quite regularly and it lets your critters interact with other peoples'.

I'm so not a computer-game person (computer-pinball is about my level) but this looks like so much fun!

Depending on when it came out, I would have missed it completely because it doesn't play with Linux and I've been running Linux pretty much exclusively since May. HOWEVER, it's available for Nintendo DS, which the Boy might get a kick out of. :-D

Yeah, stuff like that is why I still put up with Windows; there are a couple of things I can't do without that don't have Linux or Mac equivalents.

It's pretty graphics-intensive, too: my old PC wouldn't run it as the graphics card wasn't good enough. But it seems like a lot of fun...and I'll quit with the sales pitch now :-)

heee! I *think* Alice will run it once I get the RAM upgraded a bit more. She's borderline now. ;-)

I don't game enough that it made sticking with WIndows worth it - and everything else (except Dreamweaver, dammit) I found something compatible for it. Besides, not having crashes or viruses tends to make up for any inconvenience. ;-)

I didn't know there was a free version...

[identity profile] morgan32.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a demo, technically, but it's a cut-down version rather than time-limited. Just the creature creator with about a third of the full library.

I'd better now dl it. I'm having enough trouble right now not being distracted by Sims 2. But ooh it sounds tempting.

Mischa was in Nip/Tuck? Without giving away plot, did he have a significant role? I might watch that if he did.

[identity profile] morgan32.livejournal.com 2009-02-12 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Um...he was guest starring as a patient needing plastic surgery for, let's just say a hilarious problem made even funnier by his other role as an angel. And it ain't wings.

Yeah, he was in enough of the episode to make it worth watching. There's a clip linked in the SPN newsletter that'll give you the gist :-)

Thanks. I used to watch this show, but seeing Mischa in a different role is worth revisiting it for one episode. This should tide me over until Castiel returns to Supernatural.
