Apropos of absolutely nothing...

What is "red velvet cake"?

For some reason it seems to be a major topic of discussion on LJ and I have no clue what it is. I assume cake means sweet and sponge-like, but I'm betting velvet isn't an actual ingredient.

Confused...

ETA: Answered! Thanks...though I'm weirded out by the answer :-)

It's one of those things that if you taste it, you might like it. I grew up on the Betty Crocker mix version of it, which makes it taste like a basic buttercream/vanilla cake with red food coloring. (AKA not the real, Southern version, which is far yummier, IMO.) ::shrug:: To each their own?

It's primarily a Big Deal in the South here in the US, although some of the cupcake places in Seattle (where I live) have it as a seasonal/Valentine's Day item. I suspect if you find it in the UK it would make sense to be around Valentine's Day, since it's a naturally red cake.
