Latest news on Poppy

If you've been following my saga of Poppy's limp, you know she was due to return to the vet this week. She won't be seeing the vet this week, because she was seen on Friday. This was unplanned and not good.

I may have already posted about this, but earlier in the week The Useless Fiance (TUF) took the dogs for a walk, including Poppy. The reasoning was first that the vet's ban on walking Poppy was harming Amber (Amber refuses to be walked alone. She'll spend the entire walk trying to get back to Poppy) and that it would be a good idea to know if the month of rest had improved things for Poppy before the vet saw her. Poppywas limping by the time they reached the top of our hill - that's five minutes walk or less. So walkies were aborted and TUF carried her home.

On Friday, while I was at work, Poppy somehow fell from the back of the couch onto the window sill. The dogs like to sit on the back of the couch, as this gives them a good view of the street outside. The window sill is about a foot higher than the ground: it's a wide sill, wide enough for a person to sit on, though never used for that purpose. I have no idea how Poppy managed to fall, but based on her mass that's the equivalent of me falling off the roof of our house. Evidently she didn't land like a cat, either. The upshot is she was in enough pain to make Mum panic (I should point out that it doesn't take much: being a former nurse Mum is great with people in pain but animals and household crises make her fall to pieces), and I got frantic text messages from Sis asking if I could leave work early and from Mum telling me I must come home.

Poppy was then hurried to the vet. The vet put her knee back and decided that she requires surgery. Not exactly a surprise. Poppy needs two surgeries, one to fix each of her back legs, and they'll be about eight weeks apart. It will cost us around £150 - the pet insurance will cover the rest. She's booked in to have the first operation on the 17th. I get all this stuff via Sis, so I'm a bit unclear on the specifics, but apparently the bones around her knees don't fit together quite right. The surgery will cut a groove into the bone and make the joint work properly. This will be permenent if successful - no further surgeries needed. No one is saying what happens if it's not successful.

Since the fall, Poppy's limp has been a lot more noticeable; before it came and went, but now it seems permanent. So I guess it's hurting her, in spite of the pain meds. She can still get around, scamper up and down the stairs, run around the garden and suchlike, but she's stopped jumping on the furniture: she needs to be lifted. Personally, I'd be happy to carry her around everywhere. She's half chihuahua; she'd fit into a shoulder bag no problem. I'd look like an idiot, but it would be worth it because Poppy makes me happy. But that wouldn't actually help, would it?

So anyhow, in a week and a half I'll be posting again, begging for positive thoughts for Poppy.
