Please help me, all-knowing flist.

What is a hush puppy?

To me it's a shoe, and that's what I get when I Google it but I'm getting the feeling it's food. Or am I seriously mis-hearing dialogue in US TV shows lately?

Also - my workplace is introducing a bag search policy. I need suggestions for something I can carry in my bag that'll make them regret it if they pick mine to search. (I don't mean mousetraps; I'm thinking like gay porn or something. I don't embarrass easily, but most of the security guys are old men and this policy is bloody offensive.)

A hush puppie is a deep-fried ball of seasoned cornmeal - note the spelling on the term if you're referring to the food. :)

So, fried dough-balls, but made with corn instead of wheat flour? Okay.

(It's just really odd hearing folk on TV make references to something that appears to be food in context, but to me is a smelly shoe!)

How about a pocket vibrator? Or a pack of condoms and/or tampons? Female hygiene products aren't exactly high on the list of things old men want to see. Or maybe a graphic slash novel? A doujinshi or something where two men are clearly fucking? I mean, if you don't embarrass easily, you should take advantage of that :)

When I was a kid, hush puppies in the UK were also those crushed ice drinks with flavoured syrup in them. At least in Little Monsters (a play centre thing with a ball pit and so on). Man, I used to be a brat about asking for those.

We called them slush puppies! Or jubblys but that was a catch-all term for anything that mixed ice+sweetness.

It might be that me and my fellow brats mixed up the terms for the shoes and the drinks, haha. Or someone was making a joke that we didn't get...

Tampons and other such products sound like a good bet, and are totally unexceptionable in a work place setting.

Dare I ask why your workplace is doing this? It sounds very dodgy.
