Notes: This is not a new story. The original version is End of the World which I posted many years ago.
I have come to really dislike that old story; I've come close to deleting it a few times. It's a BDSM-slave-fantasy, consent is murky and it says some things about dominance and abuse that are at best problematic and at worst bloody dangerous. But a lot of people seem to like it, so instead of deleting it, I'm posting this version.
The plot is the same, but I have re-framed the story so that the slavery is flashback rather than the starting point, and also switched to third rather than first person. This allows several different perspectives on what happened rather than just Daniel's. It does not resolve all of the issues. It's still a BDSM-slave-fantasy and the consent issues are...better but will be triggering if you're sensitive to that. Some of the graphic abuse is softened by the change of perspective but some is actually stronger because of it. The other thing I have done is merge the three fics of the original into one, so that this version is about recovering, not falling into despair. Hence the more hopeful title.
As I've gotten older I've found my own tolerance for cruelty and torment in fanfics has waned a lot, but I haven't held back in this one so as to remain true to the original. So please take the trigger warning seriously: this story has a lot of cruelty and abuse of all kinds. It does end with hope, but there's a lot of dark to get through before the light can be seen.
