Confused

Man, the Wizard of Oz references, I get.

But could someone please explain to me what "Soylent Green is people" means?

Pretty please.

America really is a different planet sometimes...

Soylent Green

was an old science fiction futuristic movie from maybe the 60's or 70's, I'm thinking Charlton Heston or someone like that. A place where life was oh so perfect and conformist like and when people were terminated (age/sickness), everyone thought they were going to a better place, but they were actually being turned into food for the living. Thus Soylent Green is people. Saw it when I was a kid long ago.

Thanks. I knew it was a movie, but I have no clue what the phrase is supposed to mean. It's like when someone says "We're not in Kansas any more." That one, I get.

Dystopian future SF movie based on a Harry Harrison novel. Soylent Green was the name of the food made from humans.

Thanks. I know it's a movie. What I'm trying to figure out is what that phrase actually means. From others' replies, I'm guessing it's about deception, or corporate power? Something like that.

I vaguely remember this movie.

A conglomerate manufactures this product "Soylent Green" -it's the perfect food. There are TV ads that run that make the product look like the best thing on earth; sort of like Coca-Cola and McDonalds ads today that downplay the sugar and fat in their products.

Anyway, Charlton Heston discovers that Soylent Green is actually made from recycled people parts. Naturally, he's horrified at the deception and tries to get the word out but the company bigwigs send their goons after him. I think the movie ends with Charlton screaming to the public "Soylent Green is people!" as he's dragged away to his doom.

Ah-ha! There, now, that's what I needed to know. I knew it was a movie, but it's like saying "Lions and tigers and bears" to someone who's never seen The Wizard of Oz - I just didn't have a clue what the phrase was supposed to mean. It now makes sense.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

(Charlton Heston explains why I've never seen it; I won't watch that jerk on principle.)

'Soylent green is people' is the film rarking up the concept of the original Harry Harrison story, which was essentially an overpopulation dystopia. The whole word is now vegan by necessity, eating processed soy beans and lentils, hence the word soylent.
