Catching up
Holy... is it really a whole week since I've posted? I must start posting more often. So, what have I been up to?
My movie last week was Awake, and unless you watch movies solely for the eye candy, I really, really don't recommend it. The eye candy is nice: Jessica Alba, Lena Olin and Haydn Christensen (did I spell that right?)...in that order, yeah. But the movie sucks. Billed as "a psychological thriller" it is in fact none of those things. Badly filmed, plot holes you can drive a truck through, twists any moron can see coming from scene 2 and who the hell told HC he can act? Because they lied.
The pity of it is there's a good movie in there struggling to get out. I mean, the central premise - a man undergoing heart surgery who finds himself aware but paralysed during the op - is pretty damn terrifying. I know; I experience the mild version myself as a kid. But this has virtually nothing to do with the plot of the film itself. It's reduced to a gimmick, and what's left is yawnworthy enough to make the title of the film truly ironic.
On Monday evening I went to a lecture at Cardiff Uni. It was part of a programme of events from the university's LGBT staff association and I was there, somewhat reluctantly, in my role as chair of the LGBTT staff network for my own workplace. But the lecture gave me some major food for thought. The title was "You won't believe what straight guys are doing these days" and, I've got to tell you, it was a slash fan's dream. Made me think all sorts of meta-y thoughts about SPN and RPS...which I will share if I can get past my RPS squick long enough to get my thoughts in order.
Last night I want to the circus! Nofitstate Circus is a Welsh company and their tour started close to my home. I love the circus so I simply had to go. The show was very unusual, more like an immersion art/dance event than what I normally think of as the circus. There was no seating. The show happens all around you, and the movement of the audience seems to form part of the show itself. It was very atmospheric, sort of gothic-meets-post-apocalyptic-techno. Most definitely an adult show; I don't mean x-rated (it wasn't!) but very dark, very erotic. As well as fun. Well worth the ticket price, but I wish I'd known about the no-seating: I would have worn different shoes!
I've barely written anything this week for my fic. This is not good...
Thank crunchie it's Friday!

Yeah...he wasn't exactly brilliant in Star Wars.
I'll probably end up seeing it at some point, it doesn't look anything like as scary as it's supposed to be, and Jessica Alba doesn't tend to do films of the highest quality.

Well, no he wasn't. But George Lucas rarely gets the best out of his actors. I mean, Natalie Portman wasn't exactly great in Star Wars, either, but look at the work she's done since.

Depends. The early part of the surgery is well done (just about the only part of the film that is, so if you have issues about that it might be scary. Otherwise...no, just have plenty of caffeine on hand!

i experienced a mild version of that recently, when i had oral surgery to remove my bottom wisdom teeth. we got everything set up and me lying down, and the anesthesiologist did her thing, then they left me alone for a few minutes so i could get to sleep. i don't remember going to sleep, but the next thing i remember is a clear picture of the window - couldn't see much else, like my eyes couldn't move - and the doctor talking about opening up a little bit more. and i remember thinking, 'is he talking to me? he must be, he must need a little more room.' so i tried to open my jaw a little bit more. i don't know if it was me or the nurses, but it worked. :-p
next thing i remember was waking up after the surgery. they thought this episode was weird - had never happened to a patient before. i didn't have any pain, couldn't feel them working in there or anything, just remember that snippet of conversation and the window.

Yes, it happens. For me it was at the dentist, too: I was having a tooth pulled and because I was a kid it had to be under general anaesthetic. All I remember is not being able to move or make a noise, but I was awake enough to feel it. I remember telling people afterwards what happened but no one ever believed me.
A couple of years later I needed real surgery and threw a tantrum because I was afraid of it happening again. They told me the anaesthetic they use in hospitals is much stronger and it was impossible for that to happen. Frakking liars! Fortunately I came through that one okay but if I'd known then what I know now I would never have let them near me. I'll doubt I'll ever consent to surgery again unless I can be awake during.

Indeed! The circus sounds like it was an unusual experience!
