I've been awake since 3am. No reason, at least I don't think so. I just woke up and then couldn't sleep again.
I ended up online (of course!) and found the torrent of Private Practice was already up, so downloaded that and was able to watch the show with breakfast. Nice. I really enjoy PP. It's a "happy-place" show for me: I'll never write fic about it or get all fannish, but I won't miss an episode and it's one I rewatch when I just don't have the energy for something else.
I also found a National Express fare to Birmingham that's actually less than half the rail fare. Which means I can go to Memorabilia next month. It'll be a hell of a day; I won't get home until late and I guess I'll have to walk from Digbeth to the city centre and then find a bus to International. More research needed, but it should be do-able. (I loathe Digbeth coach station, though. Waiting there is like pinning a sign on your back saying "please assault me".)
But I do love Memorabilia. It's like a giant Toys R Us for media fans. It's changed so much since I first started attending...um, five or six years ago, I guess. Maybe even longer. There are some things you can't find anywhere else (or, I can't anyhow). It's a silly place to buy DVDs as there's usually a huge markeup but other things are far cheaper there than online. In the past few years the stage area has become much more interesting, too; I don't so Memorabilia to see the guests, but they're a worthwhile bonus, and sometimes they have really fun demos. Mostly, I just get a kick out of the stormtroopers working security :-)
Tomorrow is James Bond Day: I'm hoping I can leave work early so I can make it to the cinema for an evening show rather than going on Saturday. Cardiff is starting to get its Christmas crowds (seriously, it's not even Hallowe'en yet! And we're supposed to be in a recession!) and although I'm better than I used to be I still shy away from crowds.
That'll give me the weekend free to...find more reasons to put off writing, I guess.

Are you gonna be there? I had the impression it's not your thing, but if you are...

PP fills a different need for me. It's like Ally McBeal in that the characters are just that bit weird, and it's a dysfunctional family but with the key difference that the characters are older. Sam and Naomi have a daughter who is almost grown up. Pete is a widower. Del is the token "kid" but he's an adult, not a teenager.
And the moral dilemmas the show tackles just seem more, well, real to me. This week's ep featured a boy who had been wrongy diagnosed as autistic. His mother brings him into the practice, but later withdraws her son because she recognised the doctor - from an adult (read: sex) website. Though the show didn't go into as much depth as it could have, it really brought out the question: this doctor was highly recommended, he could help her kid. But she was obviously assuming he was also some kind of threat to her boy as well. Tough call on both sides.
Yeah, I'd say it's well worth checking out.
