There's an eclipse of the moon tonight - very shortly, in fact, if you're here in the UK.

And it got me wondering - how do you suppose an eclipse of the moon would affect a werewolf? By definition, a lunar eclipse only happens at full moon. So it's got to have some effect, doesn't it?

I mean, it's pretty much a fantasy staple that an eclipse of the sun affects stuff - the whole night-within-a-day thing didn't start with Ladyhawke.

Not that this has any relevance to Cry Wolf or anything... Just wondering.

Lunar eclipse! What a luscious thought to run with! And a blood moon at that, right? Copper colored at least. There's gotta be some kind of bunny running from a wolf in all of that!

I could see it in two ways, maybe Blair the werewolf would get a *pass*, or perhaps it would make things worse Blair thw werewolf would lose control?? Just thinking out loud.

I'm reading "Fool Moon" by Jim Butcher right now and I thought of this question. Someone asks Dresden if the fact it's cloudy and raining will affect the werewolf cycle. Dresden replies that, while we might not be able to SEE the moon, the magic used to create a werewolf is still there regardless. So an eclipse of the moon, like the clouds, wouldn't affect a werewolf.

According to Harry Dresden, anyway. ;-D

Sounds like Dresden is mixing up magic and science. Because that's a logical explanation...until you start to think about it.

The full moon, technically, is a specific instant, and in at least half of the world that instant is going to happen in daylight...but I don't know any lore that has werewolves changing during the day (unless it's a 'verse where they can change at will). So the sight of the moon is significant. How significant...is the interesting question.
