More snow!

I know, we Brits are weird about snow. Apologies to those of my friends who are laughing at us.

When I looked out of my window this morning it looked like we'd had about 3 inches of snow overnight. This was, however, in the dark. Actually walking to work it was clear we'd had a lot less snow than that: my guesstimate would be about an inch. Nothing to worry about, though parts of my route were worryingly icy.

Right now, however, there's a very heavy snowfall outside my office window. Not blizzard, but definitely lots of snow. I'm hoping it won't last too long.

On the bright side, if it stays like this I'll get my Amber-in-the-snow photos :-)

It's incredibly amusing, but at the same time... Do you folks just not GET snow? Is that why there's all the snow-drama?

Where I live (South Wales) snow is pretty rare. Last year we didn't get any. In the north of the country snow is more common but it's really only in Scotland that they can expect it all the time and are prepared for it. In the south - where London is - serious snowfall is unusual. Some of the news services have said this is the worst for eighteen years, and to put that in perspective we're talking about less than a foot of snow in London. Also, snow doesn't stick around in Britain. We can get blizards one day and in a few days it's all gone: the blessing of living on the Gulf Stream.

There's two things, really. First, snow is rare enough that folks get excited about it - like me wanting to watch Amber play. Then there's the economic thing: we get heavy snow so rarely that it's cheaper to let the country come to a standstill for a couple of days than it would be to prepare for it properly. So when it does get really bad (about once a decade), Brits tend to panic a wee bit.

The last serious snowfall where I live was about five years ago (maybe four), and that one really did lock us indoors for a while. But it was gone two days later.

*nod* I figured it was something along those lines. ;-) As someone that deals with it daily in the winter, it's just cute to watch. *g* I mean, THIS is my house right now (and it's very typical for this time of year), so yes. I'm giggling at you folks because it's... I can't get past cute. ;-)

Cute is about right. Though it's not so cute if you're stranded somewhere by the weather.

The snow in that picture of your house? That would bring this whole country (or everything south of Scotland, anyhow) to a grinding halt.

*nods* There's about 2 1/2 feet there, spread out over 3 storms. Very common for us. It's actually BAD for us to not have snow in the winter (the winter economy comes to a screaming halt).

And the bits I meant were cute was the squee, I know what a pain it is to be stranded. ;-)
