My dogs are crazy. You probably knew this, of course.

Yesterday I was dog-sitting while Mum was shopping and everyone else was still at work. Dog-sitting is easy: I stay upstairs and watch TV or do whatever on the PC, Rocky curls up on the floor of my room and Poppy and Amber usually stay downstairs. They like to sit in the front window and watch for someone else to come home. Occasionally, someone will walk past the house and they'll try to bark the roof down, but they don't usually make trouble.

But yesterday... Yesterday they started barking and didn't stop. Eventually, I went downstairs to tell them to shut up. I expected to find them in the window, barking at next-door's dog. Instead, they were under the stairs. Under the stairs in our house is an open area where we keep the coats and shoes. It's pretty dark under there and it tends to get messy and shoes get piled up instead of stacked neatly. There's also a little plastic stool-thing that Mum uses to do jobs where most people would kneel down, as she can no longer do that. Both of the dogs were in the dark, both barking their heads off. Poppy was on top of the shoes, trying to her nose get under the stool.

I thought there must be something alive in there. Maybe a cat got into the house, or a rat or, well, something small and furry. Being alone in the house I couldn't call for backup. But I figured, I've got two terriers here. If there is something in there that shouldn't be, they'll catch it and kill it. So I turned on the light and started lifting things out of the way, while Poppy showed me where she wanted to go. Once I started moving things, Poppy quit barking; Amber didn't. So I was convinced that something was about to scurry out at me.

You know what it's like in a situation like that: when you don't know what's there you start imagining all kinds of things. I swear, I would not have been entirely surprised if a snake or a tiny dinosour jumped out at me.

Suddenly Poppy dived behind one of Sis' boots and I backed off, sure she'd found something.

She came out with [drumroll] a large dog-biscuit in her mouth. Then she curled up in the middle of the hallway, tucked it underneath her chest and stayed there.

I can only think it must have been Amber's biscuit and she'd "buried" it under the stairs, only for Poppy to find and steal it: hence all the barking.

Crazy, crazy, crazy dogs...
