Happy Holidays!
Dec. 23rd, 2008 05:48 pmToday was my last day in work before Christmas. I was so darn bored; almost no one was in the office and I was really struggling to find work. It's not like I didn't have things to do, but everything is at a stage where I need someone else's input before I can proceed...and everyone else is on holiday!
I did successfully negotiate an extension to my National Accounts deadline, but that was kind of a no-brainer; as there's no one in work who could sign off my data I was pretty sure the Bank of England bods would agree to wait rather than risk working with bum figures. Still, it sounds cool when I put it like that, doesn't it? :-)
Mum and Sis have been working all day to clear a year's worth of accumulated crap off the dining table so we can all sit down to Christmas dinner. Evidently they decided it was in fact, accumulated crap, 'cause instead of trying to find somewhere to put it all Sis just took several bags worth down to the tip. (It's okay; they have recycling facilities for most stuff so very little ends up in landfill.)
And now I can relax for a couple of days. I was thinking about one more visit to Cardiff tomorrow, but I think I'll leave it until the weekend. I don't really need to shop and my experience of the bus service on Christmas Eve is not good. I'd like to spend a few hours in Cardiff...but I don't want to get stuck there!
So the plan for tomorrow is a) write fic; b) watch The Muppets Christmas Carol (don't laugh - it's my Christmas Eve ritual and I don't care!) and c) read a book. I'm re-reading the Retrieval Artist series as there's a new novel out in February. I really like these books. It could be interpreted as a right-wing cautionary tale about the dangers of diversity...but I'm 98% sure it's not intended that way. It's just a really dark 'verse in which humans are definitely not the dominant species. And a perfect antidote to all the Christmas saccharine :-)
(Why is there no Retrieval Artist fanfic? Or is there, somewhere? If I ever sign up for Yuletide again, I'd most definitely ask for it.)
My Dreamwalker sequel: 8,000 words, plus about eight handwritten pages not yet typed up. She's shaping up nicely to be my first fic of 2009.
A very happy holiday to everyone, however you celebrate the season.
