John Winchester's Journal
Feb. 22nd, 2009 03:45 pmWhy is it, any time I make plans to be productive for a weekend, something happens to stop me?
This time it was something good: My copy of John Winchester's Journal showed up on Saturday morning. Instead of spending the day writing, I spent it reading :-)
The Journal is pretty damn good. Beautifully presented, as if it's a photocopy of the journal itself, it's a chronological account of the years between Mary's death and the beginning of the show itself, interspersed with notes about nasties out there, other hunters and so on.
There are a couple of things we've seen in the canon journal that aren't in this version, but a lot of it is. And there are some canon issues. It totally contradicts In The Beginning: according to the Journal, John and Mary married in 1978 and hadn't known each other for very long before that. In The Beginning was set in 1973. The early part of the Journal is consistent with Supernatural: Origins, including most of the comics' canon errors, but at least it's consistent. It includes the events of Supernatural: Rising Son, too.
Parts of it are heartbreaking; parts of it are hilarious. I laughed out loud at the reference to Jimmy Hoffa, but I think the reference to 9-11 was perhaps going a bit far. Leaving it out would have been just as jarring, but still. I'm also a little disappointed that the opportunity to explain what the hell Dean was doing in New Orleans in October 2006 was missed - I know the episode was filmed before Katrina, but it's a glaring thing that could really use some spackle.
It's also chock-full of plot bunnies! Totally recommended.
