Day 16 - Your guilty pleasure show
So, when asked to name a show I hate, I treated y'all to my rant about reality TV, in particular the talent show format. But I will confess, there is one show in that format I did rather fall in love with last year. That show is Strictly Come Dancing.
In my defence, it's not a Joe Public show: the contestants are celebrities (albeit mostly 'celebrities' I'd never heard of), so it falls into my "still evil, but not super-evil" category. But still...this is a genre of TV I try to avoid like the plague it is, so why did I end up avidly following it?
Well, partly, it was because I was stuck at home dog-sitting for a long weekend while the family went off to a party. The weather was awful so I couldn't walk the dogs. I couldn't go out. And I had planned things badly so I had nothing to do. I ended up scouring iPlayer for something to watch and found the 'series catch-up' for Strictly. My original intent was to have this on the TV as background noise while I wrote fic. But I kept getting distracted by the pretty, and eventually I gave up on the fic and started paying attention to the show.
Anyhow, I know very little about formal dancing (someone tried to teach me to waltz once but it's an experiment that doesn't bear repeating. I'm clumsy anyway and I have no ear for music). But what I really enjoyed about the show wasn't the music and dancing, but the personalities. I really don't care about all the technical crap the judges kept spouting: I was in it to be entertained, and the most entertaining dancers weren't always the judges favourites. Still, I found myself really invested in the show as the series came to an end. I even voted in the last two.
So, yeah. That'd be my guilty pleasure. When's the next series?
