Inception thoughts
Aug. 9th, 2010 01:23 pmI'm not big on writing meta. I've done it, but mostly I like to work out that kind of thing via fic. When it's a movie I want to talk about, it's harder. For me, two to three hours isn't long enough to get to know characters well enough to write about them. I managed it for Jennifer's Body by watching the film so many times I've got it memorised. I've got to really love a movie to do that!
I'm thinking about Inception. It's a movie that begs for speculation and theories, and there's a lot of it out there. Fanfic has sprung up surprisingly fast...most of it slash which isn't a shock if you know fandom, but kind of is from the movie itself, which is refreshingly non-sexual. There are times I see a couple of gals or guys on screen together and immediately see them together. But that didn't happen for me with this movie. I think my slash goggles are slowly dying.
Or maybe it's simply that sex is the last thing I'm thinking about with this movie, this set of characters. There's so much else to think about beyond ( cut for spoilers, though these are only little ones )
I love the totem idea. A day or so after I first saw Inception I saw a post on DW's 'latest' feed which asked how many people, after seeing the movie, immediately went out and made one for themselves. I admit, it hadn't occurred to me. But when I saw that post, I knew instantly what mine would be. It's something I used to carry everywhere with me, just like a totem, not for that purpose of course, but simply because I liked it. It's not something made. It's a stone. The store where I found it was one of those new-agey places selling quartz crystals and tumblestones. But this isn't like those. It was labelled 'peacock ore' but that's hardly a geologically accurate name. It's bornite: a small piece about the size of a peach stone. It would work for me as a totem (not that I need one) because no one else could know this particular piece as well as I do - how all the rough edges feel against my skin, which edge is just angled enough to be sharp, how the colours it holds change as you angle it into the light, which edge has blue sparkles among the gold and pink...so yeah. That would be my totem. I dug it out of its drawer to see if I'd remembered it accurately. I might have to start carrying it again :)
I really want to write fic about this movie... So far my ideas aren't formed enough but I hope I'll get there.
