It takes a ton of self-confidence and sheer determination to make it through SEAL training. The two I met in RL were arrogant, but with marshmallow hearts. I don't think Steve's characterisation is out of line, but the show plays hard on his belief that he can do no wrong, especially first season.
I'm not questioning the realism. A lot of men are arrogant pricks :)
But for me, I'm not going to stick with a show when I dislike the so-called hero as much as I did him in the pilot. I'll give it a few more eps, but so far I'm not all that hopeful.
So far Danny doesn't seem to have much character. Chin is interesting. Is Kono Grace Park's character? Please tell me she'll get a few eps where she doesn't appear half-naked. I like strong women characters but not token booty.
I'm surprised that you see Danny as not having much character. He came through clearly for me in the pilot. What are you looking for?
I don't know. It's hard to define. I just need something I can connect with. A vulnerability. Intellect. Values I share. Something.
I have a tough time with cop shows in general. Procedurals leave me cold. The character setup for McGarret in the H50 pilot would normally be perfect for me - dead father or daddy issues - but he just totally turns me off. Which would be okay if I connected with the other lead.
Hell, I'm only three episodes in. Maybe I'll get there when the show settles in a bit. I've got the whole season, so there's time.
*nods* you may not like it because of its format, but the first season has a theme of ohana (family). I know folks who never liked it; that's OK too. You may like Once Upon a Time better, but that's a completely different show.
See, that's my thing. All my friends seem to love it, so I expected to at least like the show. I'll stick with it a while - very few shows are at their best in the pilot.
Not gonna lie, there were episodes and instances that irritated me and annoyed me and downright enraged me. It's that kind of show. It has a conservative bent and it isn't shy about it. However, the relationship between Steve and Danny and the fact that the women have agency and motivations of their own and are actually people... I'm sold on that, it's really quite amazing considering what kind of show it is and how these types of shows usually use and treat female characters (not saying they don't blunder or there isn't fail - there is, a lot, but it saves itself).
I also came late to the party and the fact that I marathoned the first season really enabled me to love it a whole lot - if you keep going and get to the second season you can read my (almost) weekly metas and reviews (sorry for plugging, but I really want other people to love this show) where I both squee and *facepalm* a lot :)

Huh. I'm glad you said that because so far I've seen little evidence of it. Grace Park seems to be there to get nearly naked at any excuse, which is very nice but I like women with brains and guts more than tits and ass.
Yes, well, women in bikinis are staple and Grace Park's character Kono is one of them, but she's so much more than that as well as the other women who appear.
It's the kind of show that objectifies women, but it really goes beyond that.
