No. 1 Weirdness...
Mar. 19th, 2008 08:51 amYesterday when I saw the news reports that Anthony Minghella died, I kept wondering why I knew that name. Yes, yes, he's a film director, but why did I know the name. Obits listed his best movies: I haven't seen any of them, though a couple are on my "maybe someday" list. Then it came to me. He directed the TV version of The Number One Ladies Detective Agency which I've been looking forward to seeing since I heard about it. It's being broadcast on Easter Sunday, for UK folks.
The novels in the series are some of my favourite ever audio books. They're not great to read: the omniscient point of view and the author's very simple style of writing can get irritating. But these very faults are turned into strengths when you listen to them instead of read, and Adjoa Andoh, the narrator of the UK audio versions, does a brilliant job of bringing the characters to life.
I've been dying to see these stories brought to the screen.
Then yesterday, in among the many other obits, I found this gem in the Independent:
Minghella's latest project, directed with Richard Curtis, was an adaptation of Alexander McCall Smith's The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency, which is being shown on the BBC this weekend. Last week, HBO, the BBC and the Weinstein Company announced they had commissioned a 13-part series of the popular detective stories.
HBO? Seriously? The company behind Deadwood and Rome is taking on the bastion of Botswana morality? The mental image that conjures up is truly scary...if you know the novels, I don't need to explain that. If you don't, I'm not sure what words can convey the horror.
Lastly, note to self: I have fic to post when I get home from work.
