Summergen is over for another year
Sep. 6th, 2012 07:32 pmThe
spn_summergen reveal and master list was posted today. This was the story I wrote. It was an experimental fic for me: an exploration of the relationship between Lucifer and Uriel.
There's one final job I have to do for Summergen and then I'm done with the challenge, at least as a mod. Even with LJ's nifty scheduled posts option, and help from two other mods, it was still taking up way too much of my summer. Look how long it's been since I posted in my own journal! I'd still love to write for Summergen, but I guess that depends on whether I'm even still in SPN fandom next year. The show is no longer my fresh new love...more like an abusive boyfriend I can't figure out why I'm still seeing.
My Sentinel love, on the other hand, is well and truly back. Over 60,000 words written on this AU and I'm not done yet. Only
pattrose has seen it so far and she seems to be enjoying it. I want to enter it in the next
sentinelbigbang, but man that's over a year away. It's okay right now, because it's not finished, but when I've got a complete first draft I start itching to share!
This is, I think, a take on TS that no one has done before. At least not in quite this way. It's not a sentinel/guide bonding fic - that's not a place I'm every likely to go - but it can certainly be read that way. It's cyberpunk - dystopic future, man blending with machine, artificial intelligence, shades of The Matrix and Bladerunner. Jim is a pretty dark character but not like serial-killer!Jim of my Predator stories. Blair is kind of a bad-guy-trying-hard-to-be-a-good-guy but not bad as in villain. Bad as in working for the wrong guys. I've managed to incorporate most of my favourite TS characters: Jim and Blair (obviously!), Simon, Megan, Joel and Daryl (in a role I hope will be unique in the fandom). The rest of Jim's canon family. Alex Barnes and Lee Brackett as my villains. No sign of Naomi yet...but this is a whole new 'verse I'm creating. She might show up in a future story. Yeah, I'm already thinking of sequels. There are at least two more obvious (to me) stories to tell in this 'verse but it could be open ended. The story I'm writing now isn't first of a trilogy, it's a stand-alone and will have a definite resolution.
I think this story has been brewing in the back of my mind for a long time. It's flowing so easily now I've started. But I'm beginning to second guess myself now and that's not so good. I keep recognising where bits and pieces of the story have come from - that's a natural part of creating, but I wonder if it's as original as I think.
And now I'm typing this instead of getting on with the damn story. Come on, Morgan. Blair's in trouble and you've got to get him out of it.
Next post I'll give you all a sneak peek of the fic. How's that?
